I hadn't heard of Hector Lavoe or Puchi before El Cantante. I am so glad this story was brought to the big screen. I love it. The music. The emotion. I just requested Aguanile at a Mexican restaurant 2 days ago. It's sad the way entertainers live end so tragically. That kinda scares me as a passionate singer myself. I'm the current Ambassador of the Republic of Somalia to the United Nations Office at Geneva. On the late 70's - early 80's during my college time in Bologna(Italy)I had the privilege to become close friend to many students from different Latin American countries. Thanks to them I have been initiated to their rich culture. The music is the best bridge between people, especially among the youngsters. Thanks to them the magnificent salsa music become very popular in the college. Some of my colleagues have also established the live band called "Siembra". Wow! What a fantastic memories! El mitico Hector Lavoe was our favorite! El hombre que de frente parese que sta de lado! I would like to salute the relatives and all the fans of the legend Héctor Juan Pérez Martínez. Hector is "El Cantante de los cantantes". But if you've never heard another Salsa singer improvise and do it well, then you haven't heard much Salsa.
Hector is one of the best singers I have ever heard. Unfortunately when he was a alive I wasn't a fan but after watching the movie about his tragic life I heard his songs and became enamored of his musical style. What strikes me most is his unsurpassed ability at improvisation. I have never heard another singer that could compare when it comes to this.

with my wife being from ponce i am now one of hector's biggest fans. we plan on visiting his old neighborhood on our next visit.there is such an auora and magical feeling about his music and wonderful but tragic life. he is truely a legend

Hector and Nilda Lavoe lived two houses away from me with their son Hector Jr In Queens Village, NY. 101 ave/224th street. I went to school with Hector Jr. at Martin Van Buren High School the year his life was accidentally taken. God bless the family and also Hector Jr's children's mother Soraya whom I know as well. My condolences....

What can be said about this man and his incredible talent that has not already been said. I have seen him in concert several times and have many pictures of those Fania All-Star concerts in Madison Square Garden. Even today, no one can measure up to his incredible talent of ad-libing and deliverance of a song. He was the greatest and the best til this day.

Sin embargo, Dios en su infinita Misericordia hizo que quienes te admiramos hoy sintamos que estas mas vivo que nunca. Estoy seguro que estas cantando al Señor Jesus y a toda la corte celestial. I learned about Hector Lavoe through the movie La Cantante. I hear a lot about how he was portrayed negatively in the movie but I did not get that impression. Being on drugs does not make you a bad individual but it displays the hurts and pains that were not properly dealt with. We all cope in one way or another and unfortunately, that is how he coped either because he was ignorant of a healthier way or because he did not have the reassurance that he was capable of overcoming his addictions and ultimately his pain. He was truly talented and loved. It's unfortunate that he like so many others did not know how much he was loved. He poured it out towards others in his music but did not pour it on himself. May his life be a lesson well learned, the good and the bad and may his music live on in our hearts for years to come.
