Hector is "El Cantante de los cantantes". But if you've never heard another Salsa singer improvise and do it well, then you haven't heard much Salsa.

Hector is one of the best singers I have ever heard. Unfortunately when he was a alive I wasn't a fan but after watching the movie about his tragic life I heard his songs and became enamored of his musical style. What strikes me most is his unsurpassed ability at improvisation. I have never heard another singer that could compare when it comes to this.

i was born in ponce puerto rico,all my life i being lisining to salsa music...but went i came to new york in late 80's that was went everithing change for me a meet hector lavoe in what was call back then 'casa borinquen'....nunca se me holvidad ver a the man hinself with a yeso puesto in one of his legs...for me hector lavoe was the voice of the caserios and barriadas pobres de puerto rico lots af can relate to him i am one of then,,el caballo sin jockey; el flaco,,el cantante de los cantantes.. y rey de la puntualidad..ect ect..siempre te recordaremos...escuchen la cancion 'escarcha'..uff..eso fue todo improvisao...

with my wife being from ponce i am now one of hector's biggest fans. we plan on visiting his old neighborhood on our next visit.there is such an auora and magical feeling about his music and wonderful but tragic life. he is truely a legend

Hector and Nilda Lavoe lived two houses away from me with their son Hector Jr In Queens Village, NY. 101 ave/224th street. I went to school with Hector Jr. at Martin Van Buren High School the year his life was accidentally taken. God bless the family and also Hector Jr's children's mother Soraya whom I know as well. My condolences....

What can be said about this man and his incredible talent that has not already been said. I have seen him in concert several times and have many pictures of those Fania All-Star concerts in Madison Square Garden. Even today, no one can measure up to his incredible talent of ad-libing and deliverance of a song. He was the greatest and the best til this day.

Hector, Dios te dio el don de ser El Cantante de los Cantanter, pero el maligno sintio envidia y por eso atormento tu vida. Sin embargo, Dios en su infinita Misericordia hizo que quienes te admiramos hoy sintamos que estas mas vivo que nunca. Estoy seguro que estas cantando al Señor Jesus y a toda la corte celestial. Siempre seras La Voz, de aqui a la eternidad.

Para mi es un honor compartir mis sentimientos con uon de los gran de la musuca el maestro Hector Lavoe; Yo creci y me desarrolle oyendo su musica en la universidad de la vida.Sinceramente tremendo tipo a pesar de la criticas pero hay que ver el lado humano. Pa' mi pana hector el grande.

I learned about Hector Lavoe through the movie La Cantante. I hear a lot about how he was portrayed negatively in the movie but I did not get that impression. Being on drugs does not make you a bad individual but it displays the hurts and pains that were not properly dealt with. We all cope in one way or another and unfortunately, that is how he coped either because he was ignorant of a healthier way or because he did not have the reassurance that he was capable of overcoming his addictions and ultimately his pain. He was truly talented and loved. It's unfortunate that he like so many others did not know how much he was loved. He poured it out towards others in his music but did not pour it on himself. May his life be a lesson well learned, the good and the bad and may his music live on in our hearts for years to come.

I just want to say Hector Lavoe was a wonderful singer and person. I still get goose bumps from his music. I first started hearing his music in Carolina, Puerto Rico. We had just moved there from Chicago. I love his music. I just feel sad the way they made that movie. Instead of giving him thanks. Made him look bad. But I still love his music. He was a beautiful person. May God have him in his glory.

Hector Lavoe's music was amazing. The man had so much talent but no love in himself. His voice had so much power and it just made you want to dance. Its really sad what unhappiness and tragedy he had in his life, may God bless his soul. He will always live as long as his music is heard and remembered.

I got impressed by Lavoe's troubled life. I really get deeply emotioned when I see natural talented people, like Lavoe who has raised in a poor barrio, succeeding to become famous through the difficulties of music ambient. Then something happens, which has got to do with money and poor origins, and evertything turns to be disaster also involving the ones who have no role in it.
I wish one day this will stop happening.

WJxgE. Soy un fan mexicano del gran Héctor Lavoe. Descubrí de casualidad el arte de Héctor por los 80's gracias a mi búsqueda de una Salsa más rica musical y textualmente, por escuchar a Rubén Blades, Willy Colón, Tito Curet Alonso y otros. Para mi el mundo de la salsa era algo sólo para bailar,sin letras o mensajes que valiera la pena escuchar. Una de las cosas que me atrajo de Héctor fué sobre todo, su enorme voz, su tan latinoamericana habilidad para improvisar y transmitir entusiasmo y personificar de algún modo "nuestras atmosferas" a través de sus interpretaciones. A la fecha, no he escuchado todos sus discos, sin embargo, creo que el mejor como unidad, es el "Reventó". Lamentablemente no he visto recopilaciones completas y serias y quizás a los productores no les interesa algo sobre él.En México se consiguen una que otra Recopilaciones caseras obviamente "hechizas" o piratas, de regular calidad. ¿Alguién puede hacerme una recomendación sobre su discografía? Un saludo a todos los fans de esa gran voz y persona. Es una lástima que no haya a la fecha un movimiento de tal calidad que rescate y retome aquél tipo de Salsa, ¿O si?
