I just want to say that I recently saw the movie El Cantante and was amazed by it,I never knew who Hector Lavoe was. But I have been so interested since and just wish things would have been different for him. I read the book Passion & Pain,the whole thing just makes me feel sorry for him.I pray for him and for the the loved ones he left behind,may god be with him.
By the way... what kind of questions are those to the right?

I think it is pretty obvious that if you are a Hector fan, that's probably why you ended up on this website, and the question is kind of an insult.
Marc is a very good singer (singing his own songs though not Hector's), but you cannot compare Hector with Marc whatsoever!!

Hi....i want to ask....what ever happened to the other hectorlavoe.com, how come they let it drop like that??...it was a good forum where alot of people would learn about hector from people that knew him and alot of collectors like myself put alot of material like videos and audios of hector so people could hear the true talent that he had....i believe the man in charge was Hector Torres....is this who made this site aswell? well i came in to see if it was still down and i see it has changed to the this one. Hay personas que parecen ser de otro mundo y eso era Hector Lavoe alguien fuera de lo común. Nunca se podrá igualar su voz y su forma de ser. Sus canciones las escucharán mis hijos y los hijos de sus hijos, es el mejor cantante de salsa que va a existir en la vida. Lástima que tuvo que irse de nuestro lado, él todavía seguiría cantando como lo hace aún Willie Colon a sus años.

The question, whether he or anyone else is the greatest is simply ridiculous - he is. I`ve heard so many of his songs and allthough not understanding the lyrics in depth (thanks to my poor spanish), his voice allways tells me what he means.

Hector was one of the greatest singers of the 70's we lost him way too soon. His singing brings joy and reminds me of happy times in my teenage life growing up in spanish harlem. The Fania Allstars and Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe are part of my musical past and listening to the music today gives me great energy!!
Even though im mexican and never been anywere close to puertorrico Hector Lavoe has always been one of favorite if not my favorite sonero, my dad introdused me to his music when he used to listen to a couple of FANIA'S ALL STARS LP's that he won during a radio promotion back in the days as he became a "salsa entusiast" back in the late 70's right during Hectors prime so need-less to say that i feel inlove with his music and now i turned my lill brother on to it and he loves it to ,I guess this goes to show that good music will always find a way thru borders and diferesces of colture....saludos a todods los conosedores de la buena musica y QUE VIVA LA SALSA Y LOS BUENOS SONEROS!

Growing up in a bad neighborhood and having to grow up as a child is hard but there was always salsa for me i have listened to Hector Lavoe's music constantly and consistantly and it has always kept me going if there was something bad going on i would listen to dia de suerte and the words and the beat would pick me up and keep me going the music that he made has inspired many puerto ricans like myself and others who understands the meanings of his music
Salsa music is something that i did not grow up listening to. As I've gotten older my taste in music is broadening and I must say that Hector Lavoe sang from his soul. I am so happy to have found him and be able to add his music to the soundtrack of my life.

I was looking on line at pics of his tomb in puerto rico. I was amazed at how modest his tomb is. He was and is such a great singer. I was wondering why don't all of his fans figure out if there is a way to donate money and have them create a statute at his tomb stone in his honor. At least we can pay a tribute to him and his music that he left us. Just a thougth.

Back in 1967 I bought my very fisrt salsa LP,El Malo,by Willie Colon with Hector Lavoe on vocals.Since then I have been a life long fan of the both of them.With all due respect to Willie,there was then,there is now,and forever be only one El Cantante.May godbless Willie, and may Hector rest in peace.

I saw 'El Cantante' for the first time a couple weeks ago. I'm so glad I watched the end credits, because I had never heard 'Periodico De Ayer' and now I'm obsessed with the song! I watch the end credits over and over just to hear it. I went to YouTube and I love the 1978 performance-the video isn't all that, but Hector Lavoe's voice and the piano and the bass are AWESOME, I'm listening to it as I'm typing this now-Hector Lavoe's voice was(and is) so beautiful, God truly blessed him- he truly had 'la voz.' He could have sung the alphabet and it would have gone gold! I can't answer who is the better singer, because Hector Lavoe and Marc Anthony are like apples and oranges-they both go great in salad!
I work at San Francisco's most famous salsa club Roccapulco. The bands are fantastic. This is were I was introduced to Hector Lavoe's' music. I am the only causation working there. I fell truly blessed every time I hear his music being played there! Thank God for Hector Lavoe's Salsa vision. His music is loved by so many. His life is celebrated every time his music is listen to and danced to. Thank you Hector Lavoe were ever you are. You are still loved and remembered by so many.
I love Hector Lavoe’s music. There is no other latin singer who can match up to Hector. I grew up in NYC listening and dancing to his music and those were the best years of my life. There has never been a better sound than that of Hector and the entire Fania All Star. Thank you so much for keeping his name and music alive. This is what salsa music is truly all about. Let’s continue to expose this generation to this great music and keep this music ALIVE.

well .. what can i say .... seeing this mmovie today was good at ... the begaining of this movie i thought wow he is graet ... until that horrilbe part ... then it got worst than ever ...i thought what the hell is he doing .. then later in the movie ..... when he was at the doctors i was so surpised at what they said i wantd to say he throw it all away i think that he was .... an amazeing man and he could sing his heart out this is to you hector lavoe you were great .... but you could have done better oh p.s how could he live through that jump p.p.s r.i.p hector lavoe we all miss you
I've watched "Ël Cantante" yesterday, I didn't know anything about Hector Lavoe thats why I searched the web for his biography... truly, God gave Him the talent. I was so very sad to know that everything ends up not so good for him... but his story gives so much lessons for those who are already on the top... Drugs can kill! and Fame is like Drugs, it is addictive!!! Only few can survive.

I jjust saw "El Cantante" and decided to research Hector Lavoe's life. This is a good website to view his legacy. He was an excellent singer. Very tragic his life, though.
Al fallece Nuestro amor de la Salsa, Diosito se llevo un angel. Le tenemos que dar muchisimas gracias a Nuestro Senor por darnos un cantante, un rey de la Salsa, un maestro, un amigo, en todo un ser de tremendo talento. En verdad, tengo que decir que la pelicula "El Cantante" no le hizo justificacion a Nuestro Rey de la Salsa. todos tenemos problemas. Pero al ponerlos tan abierta y olvidar lo grande que Hector LaVoe hizo da mucha pena. Solo digo. Dios los bendiga en los Reinos del Cielo y algun dia nos veremos y ahi se va saber y oir quien es en verdad el rey de la Salsa y no olvidaremos al Sonero Mayor, Ismael "Maelo" Rivera.
